Tiong Bahru Market has a history of more than 60 years. In year 1955, Tiong Bahru Market was actually known as Seng Poh Market and was constructed under the auspices of the government agency – National Environment Agency (NEA)after some hawkers moved to an open area on Seng Poh Road. The Seng Poh Road was named after Tan Seng Poh (year 1830 – 1879) from Perak(Malaysia). He was a Municipal Commissioner, a Justice of the Peace and a brother in law of Seah Eu Chin.
The hawker stalls in the market was constructed with a simple wood frame and zinc pitched roofs. Meats and fish were hung without any refrigeration. Tiong Bahru market other than the residents of Tiong Bahru, also catered to needs of the residents from Henderson and Bukit Merah estates. Heritage street foods such as Chwee Kueh, Lor Mee, Chinese Pao, Hokkien mee, Porridge and roast meat were available in the market.
Today, Tiong Bahru Market Hawker Centre is one of the best hawker centres in Singapore. You find almost all the popular Singapore dishes at this culinary place such as Chicken Rice, Chee Kueh, Wonton Mee, Bak Kut Teh and Herbal Soups. The popular stalls are always in long queues during weekdays lunch time as well as weekends.
