Kim Seng Park is located on the opposite of Singapore River bank from Rivière. The Park is named after Tan Kim Seng (1805 – 1864) who was a successful businessman and leader born in Malacca (Malaysia). He came to Singapore in year 1840 and founded Kim Seng & Company, a trading house at Boat Quay. He build and endowed the Chinese Free School known as the “Chui Eng Is E” in Amoy Street and dedicated to the public Kim Seng Road which lead from River Valley to Havelock Road. Tan Kim Seng also support the Tan Tock Seng Hospital and was well known for sending pork and money to patients annually during the Chinese Lunar New Year. He became a Justice of Peace in year 1850.
His grandson, Tan Jiak Kim was a founder member of the Straits Chinese British Association and a member of the Legislative Council for 16 years. The street bearing his name (Jiak Kim Street) is where Rivière is located.
